In last Saturday, the film phenomenon in Brazil “Tropa de Elite” (“Elite squad”), won the Golden Bear for best film at the Berlin International film festival. The drama by the director José Padilha, shows police violence and corruption in Rio de Janeiro, in the midst drug trafficking in the slums of the city - as a native, I certify that the film is a portrait of reality, what happened in 1997, but that has not changed much after 11 years.
The Berlin International Film Festival is the most important in Europe, followed by Cannes and Venice, and already awarded as best film “Central do Brasil” (“Central Station”) by the director Walter Sales in 1998. The award get surprise to the criticism and international press because “There will be blood” starring by Daniel Day-Lewis was the favorite and has eight Oscar indications. The award for best film, in addiction, gave further up to “Elite squad” that return in Brazilians cinemas and now are forecast to debut in the international circuit. The film of the character Nascimento Captian was a real phenomenon, two months before the debut in cinemas in October of last year, the film was copied and sold on DVD in the off-market – everybody talked about that, people everywhere repeated the speech Movie "ask to leave, asks to leave”.
The main actor Wagner Moura, was also the villain at the soup opera “Paraíso Tropical” with the actress Camila Pitanga. They formed the couple Olavo and Bebel and became another phenomenon of national popularity. Although, the film has been seen by most Brazilians before the debut in the big screen, “Elite Squad” was absolute success in the national category of 2007, almost two million people saw the film in the cinema.
